Spread The Warmth by YourFleece

Here’s the thing: the holiday season is supposed to be a time to gather together with friends, family, and community to celebrate the spirit of those things, however we choose to interpret that. It’s supposed to be a time of warmth, gratitude, and sharing. But the sad reality is that the holidays can be cold and hard for a lot of people. For some of us, the time for friends, family, and community becomes a time when the pangs of loss, misfortune, and financial hardship are felt more acutely than during the rest of the year. Even some of us who aren’t suffering from loss, or misfortune still find ourselves tightening budgets, driven by our desire to give, and share with those around us, and for full participation in holiday festivities.

We at YourFleece.com want our own version of full participation in the holidays, too. So this season we’re partnering with charities in a campaign called Spread the Warmth. We’re encouraging our customers to perform this simple act of service to help others feel the warmth of the holiday spirit.

What is Spread the Warmth?

Spread the warmth is a campaign that encourages our customers to band together, pool resources, and create as many simple, no-sew fleece throw blankets, as possible, and distribute them to hospitals, charities, the elderly, the sick, the homeless, and/or anyone whose spirits, or circumstances might be lifted. For instance, a family who could use the extra savings of keeping their thermostat set a few degrees lower during the cold months.

Our campaign partner is Project Linus, a charity made up an army of ‘blanketeers’ that orchestrates the production and donation of blankets and afghans to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. Individuals, neighborhood groups, civic engagement groups, boy scout troops, or anyone with the desire to participate in a fun and rewarding service project is encouraged to get involved. You can find your local Project Linus chapter by going to the Project Linus site, clicking 'chapters', and then selecting your state. YourFleece.com sells basic no-sew throw kits, already cut to size, or you can purchase fleece fabric in bulk quantities and do the sizing and cutting yourself. We’re also encouraging social media circulation of the campaign through posts, and photos accompanied by our campaign hashtag #spreadthewarmth.

Making Blankets

Fleece throw blankets are already easy and inexpensive to make, and right now all inventory on YourFleece.com is 30 to 60 percent off. We’ve also created a coupon code, SpreadTheWarmth to enter in the checkout process that will cut order totals another 20 percent. Orders over $50 ship free.

Make blankets whatever size and style you like best. You can find all kinds of tutorials online, that demonstrate all kinds of clever, decorative techniques for tying the fringe around the edges. Below you’ll find our step-by-step instructions on the basic method.

  1. Begin with two 5-foot by 6-foot pieces of fleece fabric. (This size is fairly standard but you can alter dimensions however you like.)

  2. Using shears or a rotary cutter, cut 5-inch by 5-inch squares from each corner, then place 5-inch cuts running perpendicular to the edges of the fabric, on 1-inch spaces.

  3. Lay the two pieces of prepared fabric together with wrong sides together.

  4. Tie each piece of fringe together with the corresponding piece of fringe from the opposite sheet of fleece fabric using a basic overhand knot.

There you have it! A simple, but very cozy, no-sew fleece throw blanket. Now go out and #spreadthewarmth!
